FAQs

SET UP NET

  1. SET UP NET FRAME AS PICTURED IN THE DIAGRAM.
  2. SLIDE ONE SIDE OF THE NET ONTO THE VERTICAL POLE COMING UP FROM THE NET STAND. THE NET SIDES ARE INDICATED BY THICK RED SECTIONS WITH THE WICKED BIG SPORTS LOGO PRINTED ON THEM. AT THE BOTTOM OF EACH OF THESE SIDE BANDS THERE IS A HOLE THAT SLIDES OVER THE POLE. THE TOP OF THE NET IS INDICATED BY THE THIN RED BAND.
  3. REPEAT ON THE OTHER SIDE.
  4. NET SHOULD BE TAUT AND AT A LEVEL HEIGHT ALL THE WAY ACROSS. ONE SIDE OF THE NET HAS AN ADJUSTABLE STRAP TO HELP TIGHTEN THE NET IF NEEDED.

NOTE: NET HEIGHT IS ADJUSTABLE BASED ON SKILL LEVEL. A LOWER NET IS EASIER TO PLAY WITH. A HIGHER NET IS MORE ADVANCED. RECOMMENDED HEIGHT – LEAVE 2 INCHES OF POLE ON EACH SIDE VISIBLE ABOVE THE NET.

PUMP UP BALL

  1. ATTACH THE NEEDLE TO THE FRONT OF THE PUMP BY SCREWING IT IN A CLOCKWISE DIRECTION UNTIL TIGHT.
  2. STICK THE NEEDLE END OF THE ASSEMBLED PUMP INTO THE HOLE ON THE BALL.
  3. INFLATE THE BALL UNTIL FIRM.

SET UP COURT LINES

  1. UNFOLD THE COURT LINES AND FIND THE FOUR CORNERS. (NOTE: ON THE LONG SIDES OF THE COURTLINESS, THE CENTER IS MARKED BY A BLACK STRIPE.)
  2. LINE EACH BLACK STRIPE UP WITH EITHER SIDE OF THE NET.
  3. STRETCH THE COURT LINES OUT MOVING BACKWARDS FROM THE CENTER LINE ON EACH SIDE OF THE NET TO CREATE A RECTANGULAR BOX ON BOTH SIDES.
  4. IF NEEDED, SECURE THE CORNERS IN PLACE WITH THE COURT LINE STAKES.  PLACE THE STAKES ON THE INSIDE OF EACH CORNER, SO THAT THE SHORT SIDE MAKES A DIAGONAL LINE FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CORNER TO THE POINT OF THE CORNER.

HOW TO PLAY

  1. PLAYERS OR TEAMS STAND ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE NET.  THEY DO NOT HAVE TO STAND INSIDE OF THE COURT LINE BOUNDARIES.
  2. IDENTIFY WHICH TEAM WILL SERVE FIRST (YOUNGEST PLAYER, FLIP A COIN – WHATEVER YOU WANT!)
  3. TO SERVE, THE PLAYER STANDS BEHIND THE BACK LINE OF THE COURT AND KICKS THE BALL OVER THE NET TO THE OPPOSING TEAM. A SERVE MUST LAND WITHIN THE RECTANGLE BOUNDARIES OF THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COURT. A SERVE CAN BE DROP KICKED (USING HANDS TO DROP THE BALL, THEN KICK IT OVER THE NET) OR SERVED BY PLACING THE BALL BEHIND THE COURT LINE AND KICKING IT OVER THE NET.
  4. THE OPPOSITE PLAYER OR TEAM HAS TO RETURN THE BALL WITHOUT USING THEIR HANDS. THE PLAYER CAN JUGGLE THE BALL AS MANY TIMES AS THEY WANT USING THEIR FEET, KNEES, CHEST, HEAD, OR SHOULDERS.
  5. THE BALL CAN ONLY BOUNCE ON THE GROUND TWICE ON THEIR SIDE OF THE COURT BEFORE IT HAS TO BE RETURNED OVER THE NET. BOUNCES DO NOT HAVE TO BE CONSECUTIVE.  ANY TIME THE BALL TOUCHES THE GROUND, THIS COUNTS AS A BOUNCE.
  6. THE VOLLEY CONTINUES BACK AND FORTH OVER THE NET UNTIL ONE PLAYER OR TEAM: DOESN’T RETURN THE BALL OVER THE NET, THE BALL TOUCHES THE GROUND MORE THAN TWO TIMES ON THEIR SIDE, THE BALL IS KICKED OUT OF BOUNDS, OR THE PLAYER USES THEIR HANDS TO TOUCH THE BALL.
  7. IF ANY OF THESE OCCUR, THE OPPOSING TEAM RECEIVES A POINT. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH TEAM SERVES THE BALL; POINTS CAN BE SCORED BY EITHER THE SERVING OR THE RECEIVING TEAM. (RALLY SCORING)
  8. WHICHEVER TEAM OR PLAYER SCORED THE LAST POINT SERVES.  ON GAME POINT, THE LOSING TEAM SERVES.
  9. PLAYERS ARE ALLOWED TO MOVE OUTSIDE OF THE COURT LINES TO KEEP A BALL IN PLAY IF THEY WISH, BUT THE BALL MUST PASS OVER THE NET FROM THEIR SIDE.
  10. GAME PLAY CONTINUES TO 21 POINTS, WITH A TWO POINT LEAD.

OPTION: TO MAKE YOUR TAKRAW GAME HARDER, LIMIT THE NUMBER OF TIMES A PLAYER CAN JUGGLE THE BALL AND/OR LIMIT THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE BALL CAN BOUNCE ON THE GROUND.
